Experiential learning

Image
I have chosen this topic to post on the blog because I think experience influences learning and we learn best by doing. This is what David Kolb`theory is about.  David Kolb  is an American psychologist and educational theorist. He  is  best known for his research on experiential learning and learning styles. Just like we have been discussing about different styles of learning and multiple intelligence Kolb also has come to some conclusions by giving his point of view how different people grasp best the information.  E xperiential learning  is a process by which knowledge results from different combinations of grasping and transforming experiences. We can grasp experience in two different ways: through concrete experience and abstract conceptualization. This process is often portrayed as a cycle. Kolb's theory of experiential learning also serves as the basis for his four learning styles. Each of the four learning styles is characterized by strengt...

Edtech

Edtech  –  or education technology  –  is about applying digital technology to support better, more personalized learning.  Why do we need to use technology in the classroom? Early learners, as well as older students, can benefit from the implementation of edtech. By incorporating play, creativity, and familiar digital tools, students are much likely to stay interested.   It  can be something as simple as using current technology in a new and fun way.   That way, no one gets left behind and the whole learning environment becomes and stays collaborative.  Bring Your Own Device educational approach is becoming increasingly popular in the classroom. In a BYOD environment, students can bring in their own equipment. As most students already have their own smartphone or tablet they use for leisure activities, incorporating them can cut costs significantly for a school. And since they’re already using their devices in their private lives, ...

eLearning

Online learning takes place at any time.  In such cases, students ideally complete the course at their own pace, by using a Learning Platform like an LMS. There are some examples of asynchronous learning like Self-paced (SCORM), Audio/Video, E-mail, Discussion forum, Wiki/Blog, Webcasting/Conferencing, CBT and WBT, Simulations, Game-based learning.     Nowadays self study is the most common method which uses wiki, blog and any reading material like ppt, pdf files to offer the initial knowledge to learners. This also allows subject matter experts to the group of learners on the classroom training to resolve their queries and doubts.  The second most common method is to create demo video to train the learners. It also helps to create one way of learning assets which help the learner know about the basics by watching.   In another type of  type of learning E-Courses are made available to the learners in the form of a CD or a Comput...

Characteristics of 21st century way of teaching

Characteristics of 21st century way of teaching       In the last years of study we have learned more about new methods of teaching foreign language to students which are very different from the traditional one. Some of the characteristics of the modern way of teaching I wanted to list in my blog. On of them is learner-centered classroom and personalized instruction.  Students have different personalities, goals, and needs, and offering personalized instruction is not just possible but desirable. When students are allowed to make their own choices, they own their learning, increase intrinsic motivation, and put in more effort.     Students nowadays own expensive devices with capabilities to produce blogs, infographics, books, how-to videos, and tutorials, but in many classes they are still asked to turn those devices off and work with handouts. When given a chance, students can produce beautiful and creative blogs, movi...

Webinar     I have been watching the videos that our professor sent us on our email address and I found them really interesting. I had never heard before about webinars and I already feel like I learned something new even without reading about it. After watching some videos online I also decided to insert one here just as an example. It`s about learning grammar through writing, speaking, listening and reading classes. The person who directs it is a professor of applied linguistics and for the moment her location is in the mountains in Northern Arizona and it snows. In the video even if I am not a participator I and interacting I feel part of  it because we share the same goals that is of teaching students in the best way possible. She has included in the webinar many aspects of teaching grammar through the theory through different tasks ,giving real life examples like that of Jamaican English, inserting pictures of textbooks etc..  There are lots of adv...
Project Based Learning   Reading about project based learning reminded me of the projects we used to make in the previous years in different subjects. Now I have a clear idea of the reason why we did those projects and their importance. I remember a project in biology and we were divided in pairs and had to construct a body cell with all its parts. The teacher left us free choice about how to construct it and what materials to use. My friend and I chose to make it with plasticine . Still today I have in my mind the steps we followed to design it and the colors used according to each organelle in order to make it as real as possible.  During all the time when we were preparing it I was motivated and wanted to see how it would look like in the end. In every step we made when constructing it, we had a look at the book seeing different pictures in order to make it like the one in the textbook. It was not only the image that got stuck in my brain but also the terms, the name...
